As I wrote in “Sur la tête de Bouddha” (On Buddha’s Head), when I tell young Iranians today that I spent several days in Iran in 1972, their eyes light up and they say to me without batting an eyelid, “Ah, those were the golden days of Iran.” I must admit that at the time I was a fervent opponent of the Shah of Iran, and I feel somewhat responsible for what happened to them afterward.
I hope they will forgive me and that the Shah’s son will succeed in rallying around him all those who are fighting for a free and democratic Iran.
